Marilyn Monroe House Maui sounds almost too intriguing to be true. Marilyn Monroe never actually lived here, but the story behind the striking building in Waikapū connects one of Hollywood’s biggest icons, legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright, and Maui in a way few visitors expect.

Today, that design lives on as the impressive clubhouse at The King Kamehameha Golf Club, tucked into the foothills of the West Maui Mountains. And the journey from an unbuilt private home to a Maui landmark is quite a story!

A House Designed for Marilyn Monroe

The story actually begins before Monroe entered the picture. Wright first developed the concept in 1949 for a luxury residence in Texas, then later adapted it for another proposed home overlooking Acapulco. Neither project was built.

Then, in 1957, Wright revisited the design for Marilyn Monroe and her husband, playwright Arthur Miller, who were considering a private retreat. The plans reportedly evolved to include luxurious touches such as a cinema and film vault, nursery, swimming pool, and generous living spaces.

But life changed. Monroe and Miller’s relationship ended before the residence could be realized, and Wright died in 1959. The remarkable design remained on paper for decades.

How the Design Finally Found a Home on Maui

Nearly 30 years later, entrepreneurs planning golf courses in Waikapū visited Taliesin West looking for an unbuilt Frank Lloyd Wright design that could inspire a truly memorable clubhouse.

The Monroe-Miller concept stood out.

The challenge was turning a private residence into a clubhouse of roughly 75,000 square feet without losing the character of Wright’s original vision. Taliesin architect John Rattenbury and his team dramatically expanded and adapted the plans, even placing much of the new structure underground to help preserve the original scale and proportions.

Completed in 1993, the result became one of Maui’s most unusual architectural landmarks.

Look Closely—Wright’s Details Are Everywhere

This is not simply a giant clubhouse with a famous name attached to it. Elements based on Wright’s work appear throughout the building, from curved forms and dramatic spaces to stained and art glass, mahogany details, geometric patterns, distinctive elevator ornamentation, and the striking main staircase.

Then there’s the setting.

From the property, sweeping views stretch toward Haleakalā, Central Maui, Maʻalaea Bay, and the surrounding island landscape. Outside the entrance, The Conch Blower, a seven-foot bronze sculpture by Maui artist Dale Zarrella, adds another distinctly Hawaiian element to the experience.

It’s a fascinating meeting point between Wright-inspired architecture and Maui’s extraordinary natural setting.

From an Unbuilt Home to a Maui Gathering Place

The building’s history continued to evolve through changes in ownership, closures, restoration, and eventually its life as the centerpiece of The King Kamehameha Golf Club.

And that’s what makes this story especially fun to discover. What began as plans for a glamorous private residence ultimately became something entirely different—a place designed to bring people together.

Today, the clubhouse is associated with golf, dining, gatherings, and special events, giving guests an opportunity to experience the architecture rather than simply reading about the design that almost was.

Marilyn Monroe never walked through these doors, and Frank Lloyd Wright never saw the building completed. Yet an architectural idea that traveled from Texas to Mexico to a proposed celebrity retreat eventually found its physical home thousands of miles away in Waikapū.
