Kīhei From Fishing Village to Sunny Shoreline

Long before beach towels and sun hats, the area we now know as Kīhei was called Kamaʻole—meaning “barren” or “without water”—a name that captured the dry and rugged terrain of Maui’s south coast. While the land seemed inhospitable, it quietly supported a small, thriving Native Hawaiian community rooted in fishing and agriculture.

A standout example of their ingenuity is the Ko‘ie‘ie Fishpond, also known as Kalepolepo Fishpond. Built between 1400–1500 AD, this ancient structure is one of the few remaining loko kuapā, or walled fishponds, designed to sustainably raise fish like awa and ‘ama‘ama. It remains a cultural landmark today and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The story of modern Kīhei begins in 1899, when Henry Perrine Baldwin constructed the Kīhei Wharf to support sugar exports. That modest pier became a magnet for laborers and small businesses—creating a multicultural, working-class settlement that laid the groundwork for the town we recognize today.

By the 1970s, everything changed. Maui County transformed the coastline by introducing new infrastructure, improving access, and promoting Kīhei as both a residential and resort destination. With abundant sunshine, white-sand beaches, and an easygoing vibe, Kīhei blossomed into the beloved coastal gem it is today.

From Ancient Roots to Beachside Bliss

Today’s Kīhei blends cultural heritage with laid-back luxury. You can stroll past remnants of historic fishponds or catch a sunset near what remains of the original wharf—all while enjoying the best of Maui’s modern comforts. It’s a place where history and hospitality truly meet.

Inviting every visitor to connect with the island’s legacy while crafting their own story.
