Have you ever experienced a concert that didn’t just entertain you… and changed you a little?
On December 20, 2025, Kathy had one of those nights.
She attended a live performance by Jake Shimabukuro in Maui — and yes, she had the chance to meet him.
But what stood out even more happened before the lights dimmed.
Jake took the time to connect with several young Maui musicians before the show. Not rushed. Not staged. Just genuine moments. The kids were able to talk with him, stand beside him, and later watch him perform live on stage — seeing firsthand what’s possible when passion meets dedication.
That’s who he is.
He gives back quietly. He shares his gift generously. He makes space for the next generation.
If you’ve ever listened to Jake play, you already know… this wasn’t just a concert.
It was something deeper.

The Boy Who Picked Up a Ukulele at Age 4
Jake Shimabukuro began playing the ukulele at just four years old.
Born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaiʻi, he didn’t just learn the instrument — he reimagined it. Over the years, his talent and fearless creativity earned him global recognition. Often called the “Jimi Hendrix of the ukulele,” Jake blends jazz, rock, blues, classical, folk, and traditional Hawaiian music into something entirely his own.
Many people first discovered him through his breathtaking rendition of George Harrison’s “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” — a performance that went viral and introduced millions to the ukulele’s untapped potential.
But seeing him live? That’s different.

The Energy in the Room
The moment Jake stepped onto the stage, the room shifted.
There’s something about watching a master at work — fingers moving faster than your eyes can follow, melodies rising and falling like ocean swells along Kāʻanapali. His music doesn’t feel forced or flashy. It feels joyful. Rooted. Deeply Hawaiian, yet universally human.
And then there were the quiet moments… when the entire audience leaned in. You could feel the respect in the room. The kind of silence that only happens when people know they’re witnessing something rare.
Kathy described it simply:
“You could feel the heart behind every note.”
Meeting Jake
Before the performance, Kathy had the rare opportunity to meet Jake personally — and spend 45 unforgettable minutes in a private ukulele lesson with him.
“It was a truly memorable experience.”
This priceless opportunity was won at a silent auction benefiting the Maui Arts & Cultural Center, helping support cultural and musical education for our keiki (children).
A beautiful full-circle moment — learning from a master while giving back to the next generation.
What stood out most? His humility and kindness.
For someone who has toured the world and redefined an instrument, he carries himself with warmth and genuine aloha. No ego. Just gratitude and love for the music — and for the people who support it.
It was a beautiful reminder of something we believe deeply at Maui Vision Rentals…
True greatness is grounded.
